Year 6 celebrated VE Day by looking at photographs of the crowds celebrating in the streets 80 years ago, choosing a person they could write about and then creating a diary entry on behalf of that person. Here are some snippets from those who produced some fantastic work. Well done Year 6! Dear Diary, It is May 8th 1945 and the war is finally over! From now on, the 8th May will be called VE Day (Victory in Europe)... Today Mr Churchill declared that the Germans had surrendered and that the war in Europe has ended. People came out of their houses and celebrated happily. I saw a woman clapping and then going back inside. I asked Mama what she was doing and Mama said that the lady was mourning those she had lost in this war… I was so happy but I ask myself…where is my older brother? I can hardly remember him as I was so young when he left to fight the Germans and it’s been a while since he has sent a letter. I have so many questions for my Mum such as… is Hitler still alive, when will my evacuee friends be coming back and do we still have to have ration books..? No more black outs, no more Hitler, no more of me being an evacuee. The rations will be over soon hopefully and no more rolling the bars of soap into a ball to save what little we have! I’m ten and the war has been going on ever since I was four years old. I’m really glad the blackouts will stop because the bombings were really loud and made me so scared. I’m also very happy to know I won’t be evacuated. They told us at school that Hitler had surrendered so the German General, Alfred Jodi, has signed a peace treaty to stop war in Europe. I saw King George VI today! Everyone gathered to see him and the Royal family speak to members of the public and all the brave soldiers who fought for our country. The whole place was covered in Union Jack flags… I liked the King’s speech. I can’t wait for things to go back to normal although I don’t know what ‘normal’ will be like! I have been sending lots of letters to my Dad but he hasn’t been responding…Why? The war has changed the World and it has changed me…
