Star of the Sea RC Primary School

A place where we Love, Pray, Learn and Grow

Reading at Star of the Sea

Here at Star of the Sea Catholic Primary School, we believe that reading is central to a child's understanding of the school curriculum and is of vital importance in life. Fluent readers can access a full range of life experiences and can enjoy an amazing breadth of genres and writers.

At Star of the Sea, we aim to develop a love and appreciation of reading which will stay with the children for life. We achieve this through careful planning and teaching. We also encourage daily reading in all classes and put time aside each day to enjoy a shared read together. Our guided reading sessions are based around multiple genres and interests to not only broaden the children's experiences but to also encourage reading of all styles, from classical literature and poetry to non fiction and graphic novels. Reading is initially taught through Read, Write, Inc. phonics. Please see our phonics page for more information

It is our aim that all children will:

  • experience reading in a variety of situations so it is pleasurable and productive.
  • access a wide range of materials, including all genres of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, plays and pupils' own writing.
  • progress to becoming selective in their own choice of reading.
  • foster a love of reading.
  • read to themselves and to others (peers and adults).
  • read regularly and develop a respect for books.
  • receive provision and support appropriate to individual ability.
  • become aware of the link between reading and writing.
  • use ICT to further the development and love of reading.

Please see below for the end of year expectations in reading.
