Colons are used to introduce lists or quotations or when the second part of a sentence explains the first eg
I had toast for breakfast: there was no cereal.
Semi-colons are used for lists of complex items or when the two parts of a sentence are equally important eg
I had sausages for tea; Jess had pizza for tea.
