At Star of the Sea excellence in speaking, listening, reading and writing are promoted, developed and expected across the curriculum from Nursery through to Year 6.
Speaking and Listening
Speaking and listening are at the heart of children’s learning. At Star of the Sea we encourage all pupils to be confident communicators and active listeners in order to learn about the world they live in.
High quality texts which provide a broad, exciting and engaging curriculum are used consistently as an invitation to read. These books are used to support the teaching of a wide range of strategies to read and understand texts. Our core reading collection incorporates fiction, non fiction, poetry and play scripts to give our pupils a rich and varied reading experience from the beginning of their learning journey at Star of the Sea.
‘The first challenge with getting children to write is offering them that initial, creative experience that fires their imaginations and makes them want to write. After that, you need to focus on how.’ Pie Corbett
At Star of the Sea we aim to develop a passion and love of writing which allows our pupils to write with confidence, fluency and understanding. A wide range of grammar activities are incorporated into daily literacy teaching to promote more confident and versatile language use to help encourage children write more effectively.
